Royal Christmas and New Year Messages

HM QUEEN ELIZABETH II's SPEECH TO THE UK AND COMMONWEALTH

The Queen's Speech isn't exactly the most exciting broadcast of the year, but I, among millions of others, watch it, as much for the novelty of the Queen talking to me as anything else ...

***FOREIGN ROYAL SPEECHES***

Just in case anybody has a fascination with foreign royalty and/or learning Dutch:~Here is the Dutch Queen Beatrix's Christmas Speech
Kersttoespraak 2010

Sorry I did look for a version with English subtitles but can't find any...

King Harald of Norway New Year's Speech
Nyttårstale 2009

Notice the similarity between the King's Norwegian accent and that of the (English-speaking) isles of Orkney, which were settled by Viking invaders....

Queen Elizabeth II: Behind the Scenes

Brushing off against Annie Liebowitz and her endless line of assistants... Asks the Queen, in all her regal finery, if she wouldn't mind taking her crown off (actually a tiara) because it might look "less dressy".
"Less dressy!" explodes the Queen. "What do you think this is?" Indicating her garter robes, which are about as dressy as her regalia gets...

The BBC edited the footage to make the poor Queen look as if she was stomping out of the session in fury. She's actually sweeping into the session late and in great irritation at having to don such a heavy and uncomfortable outfit...

The Monarchy: the Royal Family at Work

The BBC's 2007 documentary on Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, head of the Commonwealth + Head of State of 16 overseas nations....

It's a Royal Knockout, 1987

IT'S A KNOCKOUT was a silly gameshow where people dressed in pantomime costume amid massive blow-up sets and lots of water and plastic balls to do stupid things on television. It was actually quite modern in its central dumbness.

Prince Edward, who was into theatre and all that, set up a special event where he, Andrew, Fergie and Princess Ann (!!) would compete...

Tony Hart

WHEN I was little, Tony Hart used to do a weekly children's TV programme about art on BBC1 called Take Hart.

These are the opening credits from an old show.

What I remember best about Take Hart were "the gallery", which displayed the best sent-in work by children around the country, to strains of "The Deer Hunter music" ~ Stanley Myers's Cavatina:

And "Morph" the entertaining little playdough man:

I used to think this "claymation" animation amazing when I was 8 and 9...

Tony Hart died in January 2009, aged 83.

Michael Jackson Private Home Movies

How typical! This was never shown on British telly!!

Some of this is ridiculous, like the "shopping" scene in part 3 where he said he "wanted to know what it was like in the real world"... trust me Michael ~ you don't!!!

Also, if you tried on the rubber gloves and opened the packets in a real supermarket you'd get swiftly chucked out ~ or bundled into the lovely control room, where they torture shoplifters...

Ivana Trump on Celebrity Big Brother

This is absolute classic ~ seeing the multimillionaire socialite dressed in pink and blue overalls skivvying about serving other far lesser celebrities and former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, who seems to hate her, as a care home worker as part of a game on the reality show:
